Privacy Policy
Last updated June 3, 2026
Qualia is a place to rate movies and TV by how they felt. This policy explains what we collect, why, the legal grounds we rely on, and the rights you have. We've kept it in plain English.
The short version
- We collect the minimum needed to run accounts: your email, plus anything you choose to add (a display name, your ratings).
- We don't sell your data, and we don't run ads.
- You can access, correct, or delete your data at any time.
Who's responsible for your data
Qualia is operated by the Qualia team, who is the "data controller" for the information described here. If you have any questions, or want to exercise your rights, email support@qualia-app.com.
What we collect
- Your email address — to sign you in and, if needed, contact you about your account.
- Your display name — shown to others; you choose it and can change it anytime.
- Your activity — the ratings, and later comments and lists, you create on Qualia.
- Basic technical info — standard server logs and the cookies needed to keep you signed in.
- Anonymous usage and error data — cookieless page-view analytics (which pages get visited, roughly how many people, not who), plus technical crash reports if something breaks, so we can find and fix problems. Neither is tied to your identity or used for advertising.
Signing in with Google is optional. If you use it, Google shares your email and basic profile info with us so we can create your account — we never receive your Google password.
How we use it, and our legal grounds
Under data-protection law (including the EU/UK GDPR), we have to rely on a valid "legal basis" for using your data. Here's how that maps:
- To create and run your account, and to show your ratings and display name — because it's necessary to provide the service you asked for (a contract with you).
- To keep Qualia secure and prevent spam and abuse — because it's in our legitimate interest to protect the service and its users.
- For anything optional (for example, non-essential emails) — based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
We do not sell your personal information or share it for advertising.
Who we share it with
We rely on a few trusted providers to run Qualia — notably Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting and anonymous page-view analytics), and Sentry (technical error reports, so we can catch and fix bugs). They process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy terms, only as needed to run the service. Otherwise we share data only if required by law.
Where your data is stored
Our providers may store and process data on servers in other countries, including outside the European Economic Area and the UK. Where data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses — to keep it protected.
Cookies
We use cookies strictly to keep you signed in and to keep the site secure. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. Our page-view analytics is cookieless and anonymous — it can't identify you, so it doesn't need a consent banner.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within a reasonable period — except anything we're required to keep by law (for example, to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes).
How we protect it
We take reasonable steps to keep your information safe, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls through our providers. No online service can be perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (and especially in the EU/UK), you have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct data that's wrong or out of date.
- Delete your data (the "right to be forgotten").
- Restrict or object to how we use it.
- Port your data — receive it in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on it.
You can change your display name or permanently delete your account anytime from your profile. For anything else, email support@qualia-app.com. If you're in the EU/UK and think we've mishandled your data, you also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
Children
Qualia isn't intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). We don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We may update this policy. If we make meaningful changes, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, let you know.
